FMCA Announces Revised Dates for Indiana Motorhome Gathering

Cincinnati, OH (Vocus/PRWEB) April 07, 2011

Family Motor Coach Association is pleased to announce revised dates for FMCA’s 87th Family Reunion and Motorhome Showcase, to be held at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis, Indiana.

The new dates for this event will be Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, Aug. 27, 28, 29 and 30, 2012, with family parking days on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 25 and 26, 2012.

This will be FMCA’s first international motorhome convention at this location and the fourth FMCA international event in Indiana. The last time FMCA met in Indiana was in 1991, at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend for the 46th convention of the association.

“We are extremely pleased that the Indianapolis State Fairgrounds was able to work with us in moving our Family Reunion to August dates in 2012,” said Judy Czarsty, FMCA national senior vice president/acting national president. The change of dates was necessary due to the changeover to the new model year for many motorhome manufacturers during the first week of July. “It would have been a challenge for many of our commercial members to bring sales representatives, service technicians, and support staff to Indianapolis in early July.”

A host of activities are already in the works for this late August Reunion. Racing enthusiasts may experience the “Endurocross Race” at the Indiana State Fairgrounds’ Pepsi Coliseum on Friday evening, Aug. 24, as well as “IndyMile Motorcycle Race” on the mile track of the fairgrounds’ grandstand Saturday afternoon and evening. The “Indy 1500 Gun and Knife Show” will take place in the Exposition Hall that same weekend.

“Members have asked for things to do once they arrive for our Reunions," Mrs. Czarsty said. "These are great events available for our members to attend at the 250 acre Fairgrounds. Indianapolis is known as the Racing Capital of the World and this weekend truly gives our members a flavor of that!" Additional admission fees may apply for these events. Visit http://www.indianastatefair.com for more information on these events.

We look forward to seeing you at FMCA’ 87th Family Reunion and Motorhome Showcase in Indianapolis, Indiana!

Fuel-Efficient Models Highlight Oregon RV Show and Sale

By Stacia Kalinoski

EUGENE, Ore. -- As spring and summer inch closer, you're bound to see more RVs on the highway.

Local RV manufacturers and dealers say sales continue to rise since the recession. Perhaps the biggest indicator of that is the activity at the Oregon RV Show and Sale.

Dealers say the big improvements this year are lighter RVs that are also more fuel-efficient. Sutton RV General Manager Eric Benson says last year was basically the kick-off for lightweight sales. He says a small, silver RV is his top seller right now, and says he's never before seen more sales in this line of lightweights.

Last year, he says they increased by 40 percent. So this year, he brought in four different lines.

"Right now, we're on pace to do another 30 percent increase this year even with the gas prices the way they are. So lightweight is the key to the market right now."

"It's growing across the nation. Every show we've talked to has had more and more people coming this year than last year, so we are expecting an increase as people gain confidence," said Dave Weinkauf, Oregon Show Promotions.

Weinkauf is running the RV show, and he says everything, not just the lightweights, is now more fuel-efficient, even the motor-homes.

And with that, Benson says most models have been redesigned since the recession to be more affordable. He says some cost 20 to 30 percent less than a few years ago.

While you might not be able to tell from the outside that some models have become more fuel-efficient, one sure sticks out.

The Element by Evergreen RV made its first appearance at an Oregon RV show this weekend.

Designer Dan Rodabaugh says the streamline shape and that fact that it runs on a single axle, instead of a duel axle, helps it save on gas.

As for the shape, Rodabaugh says he was inspired by boats.

He calls the Element a yacht on wheels because most of the materials come from the marine industry. They're waterproof and rot-proof.

"I've always been in the marine lifestyle, and so when I got into the RV industry, I noticed there was maybe a little bit of a lack of styling and detail," Rodabaugh said.

The Element runs for $47,860 and is now available at Sutton RV in Eugene.

The show runs again Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Lane County Fairgrounds.

Motorhome Check: Britz Campervans, Explorer

By Dan Uglow

Drive: 8/10

Motorhomes are built by converting a commercial van into a habitable recreational vehicle. In the case of the Explorer an Iveco chassis cab was used and then a bonded aluminium rear added. Accordingly the drive of the motorhome is akin to driving a small truck — there’s a high driving position, excellent visibility thanks to the large wing mirrors and rear window, and the semi-automatic gearbox is very smooth. Speeds of 120 km/h on the freeway were met with no over-revving of the engine and the vehicle handles well and is surprisingly easy to drive. However the ride in the rear of the van where children are meant to sit is insufferable. A trampoline would provide less bounce and more comfort.

Kitchen: 9/10

Featuring a four-burner gas hob, microwave and fridge, the excellent galley literally includes the kitchen sink. The fridge runs off the leisure battery and can be used at all times, although the microwave needs an electric hook up. Britz provide a kettle, toaster, saucepans, crockery and cutlery.

Sleeping: 9/10

The Explorer offers two double beds for its night time setting — one above the cab and the other from the U-shaped lounge that can be quickly converted. Both options are large and comfy.

Washroom: 7/10

The washroom features a shower, sink and toilet using a wet-room design. The downside of this is that if you have a shower first and then one of your party wants to use the loo, then it’ll be soaked with water. However such a design is space saving and since your clients are likely to be on campsite most of the time they’ll use those amenities instead.

Service: 8/10

Britz do provide a good level of customer service, which was tested on a couple of occasions when our battery went flat. The pick up and drop off at the branch was also easy and accommodating and the company’s travel agent support is also top notch.

Overall: 82%

An excellent van for couples that is extremely comfy to drive and live in. However the ride in the back seats, which are located in the rear overhang of the van above the suspension, is poor. The Escape, also by Britz, has a different floorplan with seats located further up the van and this would be more ideal for couples with kids.

New rules on motorhomes to boost tourism

The rules on allowing motorhomes into Guernsey are being streamlined to boost tourism.

Under a new scheme campsite owners will be allowed to apply for permission to use part of their sites for motorhomes.

Visits will be limited to one month and the number of motorhomes will be restricted to between 6 and 8 on each site.

The use of caravans and motor homes in Guernsey has been carefully managed since the 1970s to ensure the protection of the island's environment. The new rules are hoped to balance the need to promote tourism while protecting Guernsey's special character and heritage.

Director of Planning Control Services, Jim Rowles said: "This proposed change in planning approach will continue to carefully regulate the use of caravans and motorhomes, while making a valuable contribution to tourism on the Island by allowing the limited siting of motorhomes at the Island's main campsites for overnight visitor accommodation."

Local motorhome supplier opens its doors on an exclusive Bentley Open Weekend

Motorhome specialists Claire and Steve Parsons are inviting people to come along this April for a free open weekend at the Peak Leisure Vehicles’ showroom in Kirk Langley, Derbyshire, including a ‘sneak peak’ at the latest new Bentley models.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
PRLog (Press Release) – Mar 14, 2011 – Motorhome specialists Claire and Steve Parsons are inviting old and new friends alike to come along this April and join them for a unique free open weekend at the Peak Leisure Vehicles’ showroom in Kirk Langley, Derbyshire, including a ‘sneak peak’ at the latest new Bentley models.

Claire and Steve will be throwing open the doors on the 8, 9 and 10 April in what will be the first event of its kind Peak Leisure Vehicles has ever arranged. It is being seen by the company and its motorhome enthusiast owners as an opportunity to showcase the products and services they provide and fully expect the new Bentley models will inspire others to join them in their love of all things motorhome!

“It’s the first time Steve and I have ever done anything like his, so it is all very exciting,” explained Claire. “We have many regular customers who we hope will come along and say hello as they are the backbone of our business and we know there are many other people interested in the new Bentley motorhomes, so we will be dedicating the whole showroom to the new Bentley ranges.”

The highlight of the event is an eagerly anticipated ‘sneak peak’ at Bentley’s latest motorhome baby – a brand new coachbuilt model, but unique in the marketplace due to its compact size. Claire and Steve are not giving much away, but there will be enough to whet every motorhome appetite.

“People need to come along and see the new Bentley for themselves, but we expect everyone to be surprised and excited by what they see,” added Claire. “There have been calls for a compact coachbuilt motorhome for years and there is clearly a demand in the market for a niche model like this, so we are really excited at being one of the first dealers to have such a product on display.”

Claire and Steve caught the motorhome bug themselves several years ago having worked in the industry for many years and have been committed enthusiasts ever since. They established Peak Leisure Vehicles to make a living out of their hobby and industry expertise. What started as a labour of love has grown over the last few years into a thriving local family business success story, fuelled by Claire and Steve’s genuine love of the lifestyle and a commitment to their many customers who have become friends.

Developments over the last 12 months have been particularly marked, with a brand new, refurbished showroom, the launch of a dedicated motorhome repair business and even offering customers their own comprehensive warranty. Originally specialising in used motorhomes, the company is now one of only a handful of national dealers for Bentley motorhomes.

“It’s been a busy year for us, but an enjoyable one with so much going on,” added Claire. “Hopefully we will get out in our own motorhome later in the year. But Easter is traditionally the first big motorhome outing, so by hosting this event a few weeks before, we are hoping to catch everyone before they all shoot off on holiday!”

The open weekend is the perfect place for established enthusiasts and nervous novices alike to rub shoulders and see the latest products on offer in the relaxed and informal setting of the Peak Leisure Vehicles showroom. Food and refreshments will be available, along with the latest Bentley motorhomes, together with the company’s usual selection of quality used motorhomes.

Unlike cars, motorhomes are more of an informed purchase rather than an impulse buy, with customers taking as much as two years between a first look and making a decision to purchase. Those that do usually go on to fall in love with the lifestyle, providing Steve and Claire with a regular supply of customers for everything from accessories and repairs through to a motorhome upgrade. The open days will allow people to explore all the motorhomes on site, discuss the options with Steve and Claire, pick up some new essentials from the on site shop or just have an uninterrupted nosy round!

“Customers come to see us from all parts of the country and often make a weekend out of it, so we hope that by announcing our intentions in this way, people have more time to make arrangements,” added Claire. “For those people who may wish to come up in their existing motorhome, if they call us we will be happy to advise on nearby facilities they can use.”

The showroom will be open Friday and Saturday from 9.30 am until 4.30 pm and on Sunday from 11.00am until 4.00 pm. Cheese and wine tasting will be taking place and the weekend will culminate in a hog roast on Sunday! For more information on the range of high quality pre-owned motorhomes available at Peak Leisure Vehicles, for further details about the new Bentley motorhomes or to pre-book a test drive, contact Claire or Steve Parsons at Peak Leisure Vehicles on 01332 824782.

Bailey Caravans Confirm Production of First Motorhome Range

by Holly Tribe

Following the launch of their new entry level Orion range last month, Bailey Caravans aren't letting the grass grow under their feet.

As one of the UK's leading caravan manufacturers, there has been widespread industry speculation that it was only a matter of time before the Bristol based firm made a move into the motorhome market.

And that time has now arrived. Bailey has just confirmed to us they have a range of motorhomes currently in development, with two models already off the production line undergoing tests at an undisclosed location.

Bailey's marketing director, Simon Howard, expects the range to be ready in time for the Birmingham NEC show in October, and has indicated there will be a variety of layouts suitable for both couples and families.

Details of the design and platform have not yet been made available, but we have established the base chassis will be provided by a market leader and the bodyshell will be constructed using Bailey's patented Alu-Tech construction system.

Why now?

The Alu-Tech bodyshell construction method was introduced in 2009 and has since been rolled out across Bailey's entire range of touring caravans to widespread market approval.

Simon explained that up until now Bailey hasn't been able to develop a range of motorhomes that was capable of offering customers a unique selling point - however Alu-Tech has changed that.

Alu-Tech

The Alu-Tech system makes use of an interlocking aluminium shell which does away with external fixing points. It creates an incredibly strong bonded shell which reduces the number of access points for leaks thus dramatically reducing the threat of water ingress.

It shares many similarities with the monocoque production design used in the automotive industry, lending itself well to motorhome design.

Bailey has been offering an industry leading 10 year integrity guarantee across the four touring ranges which carry the technology and this is expected to be offered with the new motorhomes.

Layouts and spec details are still a closely guarded secret - but we'll be the first to bring news as soon as it becomes available.

As one Caravan Times reader, Ann Foote from Reading, recently commented: "Bailey Motorhome. Happy times!"

Autocruise Pulse

The 2009 Autocruise Pulse was winner of this year’s Multi-Purpose Motorcaravan in this year’s Which Motorcaravan Awards.

One of the main reasons this newcomer has won the top prize is its availability – it can be bought from a nationwide network of dealers, rather than trekking across the country to the manufacturer.

Inside, the Pulse has a car-like theme with grey carpeted walls, grey mottled worktops and the Waeco fridge’s silver and grey facia. And if all this sounds a little dull, think again: two-piece cream-coloured removable carpets match the front of the furniture units.

The Pulse is classy, attractive, and some would say almost futuristic. It’s certainly on a par with many a luxury MPV car, and no-one would be ashamed to take it on the school run.

You can go camping with a full house of four if you opt for the optional roof bed – as long as the occupants are small enough to fit, that is, as the upper berth measures just 1.90m by 1.10m.

Once on site, both the cab seats swivel to face the rear bench.

The rear-hinged Reimo roof is easy to raise – just undo the two front straps that attach to the bulkhead and give it a shove. Mesh vents with closing zip panels are on each side for ventilation.

As for artificial lighting, there are two strip lights over the kitchen, one above the bench and another above the sliding door, but there’s no lighting at all in the cab apart from the base vehicle’s courtesy light.

The Webasto diesel heater should keep you cosy during the spring and autumn and all the windows aft of the cab are double-glazed.

The keen cooks among you will find the kitchen facilities perfectly acceptable, with a two-burner hob (with spark ignition) and grill, as well as a hot and cold tap above the stainless steel sink. There’s no draining board, but the compressor fridge has a generous 72-litre capacity and a freezer compartment.

Alongside is a large cupboard suitable for a Thetford 335 Porta-Potti – most essential! There’s a good amount of worktop, suitable for siting your television, with aerial and mains sockets provided.

Additional storage is provided by various cubbyholes around the kitchen unit and a drawer beneath the bench seat. There’s a large wardrobe (which can be accessed from inside the camper or via the rear tailgate), and there’s masses of space behind the rear seat if you slide it forward. The tabletop stores back here, too, while inside there are two positions for the table – there’s a swivel leg beside the front passenger seat and another that swings out in front of the bench.

The Fiat Scudo base vehicle seems a great compromise between an expensive VW T5 and a larger but cheaper Fiat Ducato, and the designers have done a great job on both its looks and ultimate usability.
Verdict:

Anyone wanting to use their camper as an everyday car wants it to look the part – and the Pulse ticks all the boxes. Outside, the smart silver paintwork, with its minimalist graphics, looks great – especially as the matching elevating roof sports grey canvas sides when raised.
Fact File:

Price from: £30,362 OTR
Base vehicle: Fiat Scudo panel van
Engine: 2-litre 120bhp Multijet
Travel seats: 4
Berths: 2+2
Insurance cost: £264.75*
